How can we talk about the future of the CD ROM if we don’t establish, first of all, what the CD ROM is? The CD ROMS is actually the acronym for the compact disc, which represents the read- only memory of a computer, containing data which can be accessed, but not writable by. CD ROMs are used for the distribution of computer software (we can refer here to games or other applications, including multimedia or programs), but the fact is that any sort of data can be stored on a CD, as long as there is enough memory and also depending on the capacity and space that given information requires.
There are types of CDs where you can store data and audio or video information as well. Whilst you can play the audio data on a CD player (the fact is that they are a little out of date, other types of data holders have been invented meanwhile, and they are more popular, like the sticks), the video data and simple data can only be accessed from a computer, but it is mandatory for the computer to hold a CD ROM.
At first, when it was introduced in the common use, CD ROMs had a higher capacity than the hard drives which were being used at that time. But things have completely changed nowadays, recent hard drives exceed the CDs, they even exceed the DVDs and the Blu- rays.
Regarding the appearance of CD ROMs, they look like the audio CDs, and the way data is stored resembles the way data is being stored on this later type of CDs. Discs are made of polycarbonate plastic having a reflective surface, due to the aluminum layer they are covered with. The regular size of CDs is 120 mm, but there are also small disc which only have 80 mm diameter and they can be used in computers or laptops as well. Besides, there are several other sizes, especially with the personalized CDs.
Regarding the format, a CD ROM has 2352 bytes with a playing time of 74 minutes. There are 2 types of CDs, the recordable (CD- R) one and the rewritable (CD- RW), which means that information can be stored, even if previous information had been stored on it. Although it was a great discovery at that time and it brought an improvement in the usage and saving of information, the CD’s place has been taken by the DVD, which has a greater space, or by the famous stick, which has a huge capacity, depending on the type.
